2009 was a year of film genres turned on their head...

 

Here is my list of best films of the year, in no particular order:

 

 

 

Up in the Air

I'll give it to George Clooney, he threw a lot at us this year and "Up in the Air" is the first of two films that make my list. It is beautifully captured by Director Jason Reitman. Funny, smart, and poignant, this was a Rom-Com that provided so much more depth than the average date movie.

 

 

Avatar

While substance was trumped by shear visual beauty, "Avatar" gave us an end of year blockbuster that satisfied and took action epics to other worldly levels.

 

 

 The Hurt Locker

This was a probably overlooked by the average movie-goer because of its content. This "Iraq War" film wasn't created like others, it is a peek into the minds of some of the craziest people on earth. It will probably snag a few Oscars.

 

 

Fantastic Mr. Fox

Wes Anderson returns with a treat of a movie. This animated film stars George Clooney and will entertain you throughout with clever dialogue and a humorous story.

 

(500) Days of Summer

A cute little Rom-Com-Dram starring one of my favorites: Joseph Gordon-Levitt. and one of my least: Zooey Deschanel. Very tongue in cheek, but extremely well executed.

 

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

I'll defend this one til my dying day. For a summer blockbuster based on a kids book, Director David Yates has transformed and matured this series into a real contender. Dark, brooding, and full of fun.

 

Invictus

Based on the true story, Invictus is the tale of a South Africa's rise out of Apartheid. This film is a wonderful spin on the overdone "sports movie" genre.

 

Away We Go

This little independent film is built on the performances of TV stars Maya Rudolph (SNL) and John Krasinski (The Office). It's just over the top enough but just real life enough to be sweet, funny and touching.

Zombieland

You probably won't believe me, but this was the funniest movie of the year. It was probably the bloodiest too, but when isn't beating the undead with a banjo funny?
